Automated External Defbrillator (AED) First Aid Course

The AED programme is a short programme of learning designed to teach life-saving emergency skills and safe use of an AED to any member of the public, organisation or company in which people may need to respond to a life-threatening emergency. The course is based on industry standard best practice for content of AED courses and following recommendations for AED training issued by the UK Resuscitation Council
This four hour course provides a practical based approach to learning Basic Life Support and AED skills. The course content includes as standard the following:
- What to do in an emergency
- Dealing with an unconscious casualty
- Dealing with choking
- Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation
- Automatic External Defibrillation
Course content focuses on emergency skills that will provide a person ‘first on the scene’ with the basic knowledge to provide life-saving actions. In addition to CPR, the course is also designed to teach the safe operation of an Automatic External Defibrillator by anyone involved in pre-hospital care of a casualty in cardiac arrest.
Training is based on industry best practice and follows the recommendation for AED training issued by the UK Resuscitation Council. Candidates will learn the skills in the sequence they will be used in a life-threatening emergency and also following the same priorities of care as all professional emergency responders. This results in a sequenced learning that aids future skill retention.
WorkSafe AED courses are not specific to any make or model of AED unit. This programme requires students to undertake practice scenarios using an appropriate AED training unit which replicates the commands and functions of the live unit.
The BLS and AED programme is not designed to provide skills to personnel who will be responsible for managing an emergency situation for extended periods of time or where the complexity of injuries is likely to be great. It is therefore recommended that a minimum number of personnel are trained to a higher level within any organisation. Full advice can be obtained from HSE guidance and the ACOP where a risk based approach should be adopted.

Our trainer Dawn Maclean was excellent. She delivered at a good pace, was friendly and encouraging and met the needs of the group extremely well.

A first aid course that you’ll get exactly what you need from! It doesn’t matter if you’ve no previous experience or various bits and pieces (which I had, which was just confusing). This course covers everything, from managing everyday stuff properly to dealing competently with much more robust and challenging situations outdoors. Because it never backs away from its principles, you’re not left in any doubt of what’s important to do, and how best to do it. Honestly I couldn’t recommend it highly enough; the type of training that works.
It helps that Outfit Moray have a fantastic instructor in Chris, whose experience in role and enthusiasm make the learning process even more valuable and relatable. I’ve never been on an FA course and learned so much so thoroughly, neither have I completed one and walked away feeling as capable. Absolutely worth your time.

I can’t thank you both enough for arranging and putting on such a brilliant First Aid course for RDA Moray yesterday. It was everything and more that we wanted/needed and it was so kind of you Claire to tailor the day particularly to the various situations that we might find ourselves in at Cranloch. As you know I have done various First Aid courses over the years and I have definitely come away from yesterday far more confident in my own ability and knowledge – I think it was your day job as a paramedic that made the day more informative, enjoyable and educational than others I have attended. Probably helps that I never miss an episode of Holby City or Casualty!
We always do go through the First Aid Procedure with all our volunteers at Training Days and/or at the beginning of the sessions but we will definitely take your advise and look at acting out some scenarios as that would be extremely beneficial. If only we could have done more of that yesterday but, as we said, next time post-Covid!
