Emergency First Aid at Work for Schools

The WorkSafe Emergency First Aid at Work for Schools course is a short programme of learning designed to meet the requirements of The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and also cover specific additional subjects relevant to an educational setting.
The core syllabus is taken from the HSE Emergency First Aid at Work guidance and stipulates that on completion candidates should be able to undertake the following actions:
- understand the role of the first aider, including reference to:
- the use of available equipment
- the need for recording incidents and actions
- the importance of basic hygiene in first-aid procedures
- assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency
- administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious and/or in seizure
- administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including use of an Automated External Defibrillator
- administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded or bleeding and/or in shock
- administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
- provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries
Additional subjects which are included in the EFAW for Schools course are:
- Asthma
- Allergic Reaction
- Resuscitation and Choking for Children
The training must be completed in no less than seven contact hours between instructor and students.
The course content focuses on emergency care and includes CPR and other emergency first aid skills that will provide a person ‘first on the scene’ with the basic knowledge to provide life saving actions. Candidates will learn the skills in the sequence they will be used in a life threatening emergency and also following the same priorities of care as all professional emergency responders. This results in a sequenced learning that aids future skill retention.

Great instructor, very easy to get on with and listens to what you have to say
A first aid course that you’ll get exactly what you need from! It doesn’t matter if you’ve no previous experience or various bits and pieces (which I had, which was just confusing). This course covers everything, from managing everyday stuff properly to dealing competently with much more robust and challenging situations outdoors. Because it never backs away from its principles, you’re not left in any doubt of what’s important to do, and how best to do it. Honestly I couldn’t recommend it highly enough; the type of training that works.
It helps that Outfit Moray have a fantastic instructor in Chris, whose experience in role and enthusiasm make the learning process even more valuable and relatable. I’ve never been on an FA course and learned so much so thoroughly, neither have I completed one and walked away feeling as capable. Absolutely worth your time.

I can’t thank you both enough for arranging and putting on such a brilliant First Aid course for RDA Moray yesterday. It was everything and more that we wanted/needed and it was so kind of you Claire to tailor the day particularly to the various situations that we might find ourselves in at Cranloch. As you know I have done various First Aid courses over the years and I have definitely come away from yesterday far more confident in my own ability and knowledge – I think it was your day job as a paramedic that made the day more informative, enjoyable and educational than others I have attended. Probably helps that I never miss an episode of Holby City or Casualty!
We always do go through the First Aid Procedure with all our volunteers at Training Days and/or at the beginning of the sessions but we will definitely take your advise and look at acting out some scenarios as that would be extremely beneficial. If only we could have done more of that yesterday but, as we said, next time post-Covid!

Excellent course
I wanted to say how much the two parents who attended the Paediatric First Aid course last Saturday had enjoyed the experience. Both said the lady delivering the course was brilliant.
The information provided on the course was pitched at just right level and was really well put across by the instructor. The practical sessions were excellent learning opportunities giving confidence on how to deal with particular scenarios. I highly recommend the Outfit Moray courses to anyone.
Both instructors were fantastic over the weekend and really made them enjoyable courses. Feedback from the staff was it was one of the best courses they have attended.
