Moray Young Competitive Climbers selected for Scottish Youth Team
The Moray Young Competitive Climbers have been busy with selection again. As some of you will remember, five of the eight Moray Young Competitive Climbers were selected for the Scottish Youth Development Squad in February and so, on 24th March, the five young climbers from Moray Coast Youth Climbing Club, Natalie Taylor (16), Will Bain (12), Duncan Brown (11), Rhys Taylor (10) and Lorna Brown (8) joined climbers from all over Scotland at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena in Ratho to compete for spaces on the Scotland Youth Team. With over seventy young people taking part and only thirty spaces available, the competition was stiff.
Sixteen coaches looked after the youth climbers and, by the end of the day, the ‘Moray Five’ had finished as follows: Lorna Brown – 1st, Duncan Brown – 3rd, Natalie Taylor – 5th, Will Bain – 6th, Rhys Taylor – 6th meaning Lorna and Duncan were successfully selected to the Scotland Youth Team. All five will continue to benefit from high level coaching at future academies and events, to help with their preparation for the 2019 season.
For Duncan and Lorna, the competition continues as they now go on to compete with youth climbers from the rest of Britain in the British Final on 28th April at the EICA in Ratho, run by the British Mountaineering Council. Although the Youth series isn’t necessarily a direct route to the GB team, the winners from the British final are flagged up by the GB team for the Scottish Youth Climbing Championships.
We would like to wish Duncan and Lorna all the very best for their next competition, as they, and the rest of the ‘Moray 8’ have done a fantastic job of representing Moray further afield.
If our Moray Young Competitive Climbers’ success has piqued your young person’s interest, Outfit Moray will be running indoor wall climbing classes locally in April and May at a cost of £45 for the course (3 sessions). The ‘Learn to Climb’ course is available for young people aged 8-15 and can be booked through Outfit Moray’s website. The course will be held over three Tuesdays, 24th April, 1st May and 8th May and is aimed at beginners.
